Your kneecap, otherwise known as the patella, is one of three bones located at your knee joint. Each of these bones is layered with cartilage at the points where their surfaces comes into contact. The patellar tendon envelopes the patella, connecting the quadricips muscle to the shin bone (at the tibial tuberosity), below the knee.

Basically, the term patellar subluxation occurs when the knee cap does not slide centrally within the groove on your thigh bone.

This tracking problem causes discomfort and pain at the sides of the knee cap with activity. Usually, adolescents and younger children are the ones who suffer from these dislocation.

Reasons why patellar subluxation can happen :

1.) A shallow trochlea, (or groove) for the knee cap

2.) Gain deviations (an abnormal walking pattern)

How do you help treat a patellar subluxation?

How is plica syndrome diagnosed?

Diagnosis is made by physical examination or at the time of arthroscopic surgery. Plica syndrome has similar characteristics to meniscal tears and patellar tendonitis, and these may be confused. A MRI may be done, but it is often not terribly helpful in the diagnosis of plica syndrome.

Typically, plica syndrome is treated by resting the knee joint and using medicines that help treat inflammation. Usually this is what is needed to allow the knee pain to subside. Otherwise, cortisone injections can help.

Understanding Your Knee Pain

What is your current age?
Was there a mechanism of injury that created the pain?
Where exactly is the pain located?
Did the pain come on suddenly, or did it come about over time?

Once these important questions are answered, you can start to look further into the symptoms involved. Once your physician puts the symptoms together, along with your personal health history, this should lead to a diagnosis.

Grinding/Crunching Sensation :

If the pain is located on the outside (lateral aspect) of the knee joint, there could be a lateral meniscus tear, arthritis, or LCL (lateral collateral ligament) injury. IT band tendonitis can also be a cause for pain on the outside of the knee.

Pain in the back of your knee can be due to a muscle pain, or the formation of a Baker's Cyst.

When a person is walking down steps and the pain occurs, this is an indicator that Chondromalacia may be present. If, however, when you first wake in the morning, and it disipates with some gentle activity, the cause is usually arthritis.
